Botox: Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum toxin or "botulinum protein", well known for its application in aesthetic medical treatments for the attenuation of dynamic facial wrinkles, is a neurotoxin of bacterial origin whose administration is extremely safe, if its indications and protocols are respected. It is secreted by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum and Clostridium parabotulinum (microorganisms present in nature). based on these effects, its therapeutic possibilities in relation to some pathologies, as long as it is used in correct amounts.

Indications of treatments in which the Botulinum toxin can be used in dentistry:

  1. Aesthetic use: it is indicated to smooth wrinkles and expression lines on the face such as forehead wrinkles, creases in the glabella (between the eyebrows) and wrinkles in the lateral region of the eyes (crow's feet).
  2. Control of bruxism: clenching or grinding of teeth while sleeping and/or awake and which, according to medical statistics, affects about 40% of the world's population. When injected into some muscles of the face, the tension decreases, not having enough force to cause friction between the teeth that causes wear or fatigue of the chewing muscles, one of the situations responsible for orofacial pain. The excellent advantage over traditional treatment is that, unlike night patches, which can cause discomfort when the patient is resting, the toxin does not cause discomfort. In addition, the substance can also be used to control headaches secondary to bruxism.
  3. Corrective treatment of facial asymmetries (related to masticatory muscle hypertrophy), severe gingival display (when the individual smiles, the gum is exposed excessively), asymmetrical smile, control of some types of sialorrhea (excessive salivation) and orofacial pain linked to temporomandibular joint dysfunction (muscle TMD, characterized by fatigue of the masticatory muscles), as well as being used in preventive treatments, such as immediate load implants and aesthetic rehabilitation, among other possibilities .

Contra indicationsof treatments in which the Botulinum toxin can be used in dentistry:

  • The treatment should not be indicated for: pregnant and lactating women, as well as individuals who have recently used anti-inflammatories or received the tetanus vaccine in the last four months.
  • The use of the toxin is also not indicated for people suffering from depression, due to their emotional state, the depressed patient can be led to a dysmorphophobia frame, which is characterized by an exaggerated or distorted concern about their own appearance, therefore, the depressed patient will hardly be satisfied with the treatment.

The procedure is performed in the office under topical anesthesia (anesthetic ointment) and in cases of fear with conscious sedation and analgesic with nitrous oxide, which promotes maximum comfort to the patient.

What is the durability of the effect of butolinic toxin applications in dentistry:

Toxins are reversible substances that are reabsorbed by the body over a period of 6 to 8 months. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out the touch-up after this period, depending on the case.
We can observe the results from 24 hours to 15 days after the application and maximum peak of action with 3 months, after this period we will have the gradual loss of the substance.

The application of Botox when well indicated and performed by a qualified professional dentist is very safe.

Botulinum Toxin Application Points

Why is Botox done by a dentist the best?

When it comes to the architecture of the face, dentists are experts in muscle and bone structures. During their dental training, dentists study the oral and maxillofacial areas (areas from the chin to the forehead) in detail. What does this mean for you? This means you can be confident that your Botox injections are accurate and deliver natural-looking results. Keep your Botox results frozen, weird, or weird by hiring a dental professional for your botox treatments.

What are the application stages of botulinum toxin in dentistry?

Botulinum toxin injections may seem like a simple procedure to you, as it is just a few injections. But really, it's an art and a science that only an experienced healthcare professional should do.

There are 43 muscles in your face and it is vital that the person performing botulinum toxin injections understand and identify the correct points to optimize their treatment.

A very fine needle is used to inject small amounts of botulinum toxin into specific muscles. By carefully choosing specific muscles, your doctor weakens only the wrinkle-producing muscles, preserving your natural facial expressions.

Botulinum toxin treatment injections usually take less than 15 minutes.

The number of injections needed will depend on your facial features and the extent of your wrinkles. Crow's feet, for example, usually require two to three injections. Furrows above your forehead can take five or more.

What should I expect during my recovery after botulinum toxin injections?

Anesthesia is not required. There is no downtime or recovery time for botulinum toxin injections.

You can resume normal activities immediately.

A note of caution: do not rub or massage the treated areas after the wrinkle treatment, as this may cause the botulinum toxin to migrate to another area of the face. If this happens, you may experience temporary facial weakness or drooping.

What results should I expect after botulinum toxin injections?

You may notice results within a few days, but it may take up to a week to see the full effect. This improvement usually lasts about three to four months.

When the effects of botulinum toxin begin to wear off, your muscle reactions and wrinkles will return.

Orofacial filler with hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid filling is also used in dentistry to treat static wrinkles, that is, those that are visible with the face without movement. The fillers are injected under the skin, correcting lines or wrinkles by projecting and smoothing these depressions. Other indications for fillers are scars caused, for example, by acne.

Hyaluronic acid, like collagen, is a natural and basic component of human skin, being a safe and established product for this purpose.

The filling process is relatively simple and can be done in the office with local intraoral anesthesia. Such procedures are safe, considered minimally invasive with satisfactory results. There may be local redness, small edema and hematoma that disappear in a few days.

The effects of facial filling with hyaluronic acid appear right after the treatment, but become more visible a week after the session, when the swelling of the face is reduced.

The main applications of hyaluronic acid in dentistry are: nasolabial folds (famous “Chinese mustache”), lips (to increase their volume), supra labial and infra labial regions (wrinkles that form around the lips, labial commissure and jaw contour. 12 to 20 months, being slowly reabsorbed by the organism.
